People are talking about Salvare Wines
Recently some of New Zealand’s leading wine writers have praised our wines. Here is a summary of what they had to say:
2008 Viognier
Full and Fragrant Viognier - Charmian Smith - Otago Daily Times. A big wine with hints of toast, nuts and mineral, a crisp, dry finish and lingering after taste. 3 Stars
Wine of the Week Blog - Sue Courtney's blog of vinous ramblings -February 2009 The best wine, to my palate, was the Salvare Hawkes Bay Viognier 2008 - beautiful aromatics, rich weighty palate and a long full finish.
Wines by the Glass by Peter Saunders - F & B Behind Bars July 2009 From grapes grown in Dartmoor. Quite dry and with flavours just beginning to open up after a full year, showing a hint of pears and apricots gently coming through quite an austere (non-fruity) style. A serious glass of wine, which shows best with food. Certainly in no hurry over the next couple of years.
2008 Unoaked Chardonnay
2009 Best of the Best - Peter Saunders. December 2009 Hawke's Bay wine with all the brilliance of chardonnay from that region without any distraction. This is working very well, quite bold in the varietal statement without loosing the drinkability which is so important. A fine, well-made wine, satisfying to enjoy as an elegant dry style with a wide range of food. Ready now, no hurry into 2011.
Not so boring Chardonnays - Charmian Smith - Otago Daily Times Decemer 2009 Unlike most fruit-driven unoaked chardonnay this is restrained and elegant, with a hint of mineral and a crisp, dry finish. A good food wine to go with lightly cooked fish or a vegetable or chicken terrine or soup. - Good Value 3 stars
2007 Chardonnay
Sam Kim enthuses about the bountiful bay - Sam Kim, Your Weekend, Dominion Post 14th November 2009 Ripe and fruity, with a subtle hint of vanillin oak characters. An elegant style showing plenty of appeal. Salvare Estate is a name every wine enthusiast should remember. Their chardonnay 2007, made by an accomplished winemaker, Elise Montgomery, is succulent and absolutely delicious. Salvare also won the 'Best Hawkes Bay Cellar Door' award.
Vic Williams matches Salvare Chardonnay with Penne Pasta - The Aucklander December 2009 Salvare Estate Chardonnay 2007 is a new kid on the block from Hawkes Bay, but it has already acquired a couple of gold medals. Elise Montgomery, who spent several years as chief winemaker for Vidal Wines was the winemaker. She arranged for the grapes to be picked by hand, then split their juice into two "parcels" intending to ferment some in oak barrels and the rest in stainless steel. The resulting wine has pleasant peach and lemon rind aromas leading to a smooth flavour with exactly the combination of sweet fruit and savoury notes that we need.
2008 Merlot Rose - Sold Out
John Hawkesby - Paul Holmes Saturday Morning Show on Newstalk ZB- November 2009 On Paul Holmes Show Waiheke based wine writer John Hawkesby recommended Salvare Rose as his first rose for the summer.
Bubbly varieties and a Rose for summer - Charmian Smith - Otago Daily Times - November 2009 A hint of stewed redcurrants and raspberries with a fresh lively finish.
Vic Williams matches Salvare Rose with Chorizo Salad - The Aucklander December 2009 Look for Salvare Hawke's Bay Merlot Rose 2008, which has a raspberry-scented boquet and plenty of clean-cut flavours in a smooth-textured frame-work.
Wines by the Glass by Peter Saunders - F&B Behind Bars August 2009 Salvare Hawke's Bay Merlot Rose 2008 Gimblett Road fruit. Fairly dry, a little extra body and a nice afternoon wine with nibbles or with an antipasto platter. Clean, refreshing and tasty; working well now, certainly into 2010 at least.
2007 Merlot Geoff Kelly Wine Reviews - August 2009 Ruby, carmine and velvet. Bouquet is delightfully fragrant on this wine, with suggestions of the floral qualities that merlot can show in viticultural districts perfectly suited to it. Here fragrant oak melds with these floral qualities, and coupled with good berry makes the wine smell delicious - though there are reminders of Syrah also. Palate is akin to the Vidal Estate Merlot/Cabernet, good berry and oak right through, oak noticeable but not too assertive, the flavours all lingering attractively. Score 17.5 or 4 stars.
Jane Skilton - Wine Writer for The Independent Wine Monthly - November 2009 Benefiting from what was regarded as an excellent vintage for Merlot in the region. It has a brambly nose with some plum and spice, the fruit is ripe, tannins are silky and in balance. A plummy palate with hints of liquorice and spice. Moderate intensity and eminently drinkable.
More Merlot - Charmian Smith - Otago Daily Times October 2009 Easy to drink with generous berry fruit, a hint of spice and a lively finish, this wine comes from Steve and Bev-- Nathan's Hawkes Bay Estate, where they embrace a slow-food philosphy. Winemaker Elise Montgomery has created many stunning reds from this area in the past, notable for Vidal. Good Value - 3 stars
2007 Syrah
Geoff Kelly Wine Reviews - August 2009 Ruby. Bouquet is reserved on opening, and benefits from a splashy decanting. It becomes a light fragrant aromatic red, rather like valpolicella with a dash of white pepper. Palate shows good round berryfruit richer and softer than the 2006. Pleasant varietal red. Score 16.5 or 3 Stars.
New Zealand Syrah - A Pespective by Jane Skilton MW WineNZ Magazine Has a lovely cracked pepper, dark berry and damson character, moderately intense yet without aggressive tannins. Not a blockbuster, not too extracted but well constructed.
Wines by the Glass - Peter Saunders - F & B Behind Bars Magazine Gimblett Gravels wine, nicely spicy with a trace of black pepper, very good texture and softening out nicely at two years. In fact the winemaker says the style has been made for drinking up to four years of vintage. Quite a delicious, gamey style with its light spice and a very satisfying wine with red meat courses.
Super Syrah - Jo Burzynska - Viva Magazine in the NZ Herald There is lashings of black pepper mingled with an incense-like spice over juicy black cherry fruit in this aromatic and mouthfilling syrah.
Yvonne Lorkin Hawkes Bay Today December 19th 2009 Deep, garnet red and perfumed with lifted plum and pepper aromas with a splash of raspberry and spicy anise in there, too. Ripe and ready to drink, it's warm, fleshy and full-flavoured. A great match for a slab of rare eye fillet. 3.5 Stars.
